What is now known as the Selling Democracy Project grew out of Sandra Schulberg’s determination to preserve and exhibit the “lost” films of the Marshall Plan for the purpose of studying the European Recovery Program’s public diplomacy campaign especially its use of cinema as a instrument of social change.
These efforts, undertaken by Schulberg Productions beginning in 2003, have yielded an international film touring program, a drive to make the films more accessible, the creation of a growing community of MP film scholars who participate in the Selling Democracy academic symposia, and numerous papers and dissertations in progress.
In a race against time, Schulberg Productions is filming interviews with
surviving ERP filmmakers and key Marshall Plan administrators. These interviews are being archived at the Academy Film Archive, and exceprts will be included in the Marshall Plan DVD collection. Schulberg Productions is now taking orders for the first DVD collection of MP films, which will include excerpts from these interviews.
North American Tour
The 25-title U.S. touring program was curated by Sandra Schulberg with the assistance of Ed Carter of the Academy Film Archive, and the support of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Tour support has also been provided by the German Marshall Fund of the United States, George C. Marshall Foundation, and the Goethe-Institut.
The international exhibitions, which are custom-designed for each venue in each country by Sandra Schulberg, have been funded primarily by the U.S. Department of State, with local Embassy support, and additional funding from host universities, cultural institutions, and political institutes.
